Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Hon. Candice Bergen, Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar and Conservative Party House Leader, issued the following statement on the increasing number of asylum seekers illegally crossing the U.S.-Canada border:

"For months, we have been warning Prime Minister Trudeau that as the summer months came, the number of illegal border crossings would surge. The update government officials provided yesterday confirms that there has been a dramatic increase in illegal border crossings since January 2017, yet the Liberals still don’t have a plan.”

"Government data indicates that more than 700 people have illegally entered our province this year, yet the Prime Minister and Manitoba Liberals MPs continue to make light of this situation. When will the government take responsibility and come up with a plan to fix it?”

"Under the previous Conservative government, Canada's asylum claim system operated in a compassionate and orderly manner. Now the Immigration Refugee Board is facing massive backlogs and the Prime Minister refuses to acknowledge the burden his laissez-faire attitude has placed on the social assistance system in Manitoba.”

"Manitobans and Canadians alike deserve better from this government. Prime Minister Trudeau needs a plan to fix this problem now; one that includes Manitoba.”
