Morden, MB –The Hon. Candice Bergen, Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar expressed her concern on Manitoba Housing’s plan to convert a seniors residence in Gretna into temporary housing for illegal migrants.

"The Federal Liberal Government has been sending mixed signals on illegal immigration, and it’s very concerning,” said MP Bergen. "The system is already being overwhelmed, and it’s clearly affecting our communities when we have to reallocate housing built for our seniors to shelter migrants.”

There has been a sharp spike in the number of migrants crossing illegally in the past few years. Between January 1stand March 31st, 2017, three hundred and thirty-one illegal migrants have claimed asylum.

"When people are fleeing violence and persecution, Canadians are often amongst the first to welcome them and offer a safe refuge,” said Bergen. "However what we are seeing now is an obvious and totally unacceptable abuse of the system that is being encouraged by the Prime Minister.”
