Portage – Lisgar Residents Call for an Electoral Reform Referendum

Morden, MB – Today, Candice Bergen announced the results of her riding-wide survey on the Liberal proposal to change how Canadians elect Members of Parliament.

"While these results are not surprising, they send a strong message – if you want to change the rules of Canadian democracy, every Canadian must have a say” said Candice Bergen.  "Canada is one of the most stable and admired democracies in the world. Any change to what our vote means can only be made with the consent of the people.”

646 responses were received, which is a significantly higher turnout than for town hall meetings.  Of these responses, 622 – or 96% - supported holding a referendum.

"The Liberals don’t believe they need the consent of Canadians to change what their vote means because they believe Liberals know better than everyone else. It is unbelievably arrogant to push through unprecedented changes to our democracy without the consent of Canadians” concluded Bergen.
