Liberals Vote to Keep Cash for Access

Ottawa, ON – This week, Liberals shockingly voted against a Conservative motion to allow the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner to enforce the rules against unethical Liberal cash for access fundraising practises.

"The Liberals campaigned on openness and transparency” said Candice Bergen.  "But they refuse to allow an unbiased Officer of Parliament to ensure that their own rules are being followed.”

The motion called on the Liberal Government to grant the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner the authority to oversee and enforce the directives to Ministers listed in Open and Accountable Government in order to end the current practice of "cash-for-access” by ensuring there is no preferential access to government, or appearance of preferential access, accorded to individuals or organizations because they have made financial contributions to politicians or political parties.

"It’s clear that this Liberal Government has no higher ethical standards than the Chretien or Martin Liberals of the 1990’s.  Canadians deserve better” concluded Bergen.
