Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Yesterday, the Conservative Opposition called on the Minister of Veterans Affairs and his Liberal Government to stop giving benefits to Chris Garnier, convicted of murdering off-duty police officer Catherine Campbell in 2015.
“I rose in the House of Commons earlier this week and asked the Minister of Veterans Affairs when the Liberals would do the right thing and stop these payments,” stated Conservative House Leader, MP Candice Bergen. “He refused to answer the question. The Minister has the ability and the authority to stop these benefits from going to a convicted murderer who is not a veteran. Why is it that the Liberals always have the ability to defend the so-called rights of the Chris Garniers, the Omar Khadrs, and the returning ISIS terrorists of this world, but have endless excuses for doing nothing for veterans, and doing nothing to defend their ability to get support.”
Chris Garnier, like all prisoners, has mental health services available to him via the penal system. He does not need to use resources meant for Veterans and their deserving family members.
After over a month of knowing that Garnier has been receiving these payments, and two weeks of questions from the Conservative Opposition, Veterans Affairs finally said yesterday that that they will no longer provide benefits to family members of veterans who are in federal or provincial prisons. Unfortunately this decision is not retroactive which means that Garnier will keep his benefits.
“The Trudeau Liberals had an opportunity to stand up for Veterans and victims and end this injustice, but instead they shamefully continue to give benefits to a convicted murderer,” said Bergen. “Conservatives are calling on the Minister of Veterans Affairs to do the right thing and intervene to address this outrage.”
